Hawks advance to GLVC semifinals

WILDER, Ky. - Simon Bitcon and Matt Spector scored second-half goals Wednesday afternoon as the Quincy (Ill.) University men’s soccer team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 3-2, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Quincy (11-6-1) took a 1-0 lead at the 25:12 mark when Kevin Vaninger scored an unassisted goal. The Hawks held the 1-0 lead at halftime despite being outshot by a 5-2 margin.

NKU tied the match at the 46:35 mark when David Gajus scored a goal off a cross from Mike Poole. Quincy, however, regained the lead at the 55:15 mark when Bitcon followed his own miss and converted the rebound shot into a goal.

The Hawks increased the lead to 3-1 when Spector drilled a direct kick from 30 yards into the net. NKU cut the deficit to 3-2 with four minutes remaining on Ben Otto’s goal that was assisted by Kevin Crone, but fifth-seeded Quincy held on and advanced to the GLVC Tournament semifinals to meet top-seeded Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

NKU, which was the No. 4 seed in the GLVC Tournament, finished the season with a 10-9 record.
