NKU FACES QUINCY IN GLVC 1ST ROUND

Norse seeded No. 4 in GLVC Tournament

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team will play host to Quincy (Ill.) University at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

NKU is the No. 4 seed in the GLVC after posting a 7-3 record in the conference. The Norse own a 10-8 overall record.

Quincy is 10-6-1 overall and the No. 5 seed. The Hawks finished 5-5 in the GLVC.

NKU defeated Quincy, 2-1, on Oct. 14 at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Jeff Anderson and Kevin Morath both scored goals in the second half as the Norse rallied for that victory.

Quincy took a 1-0 lead at the 18:24 mark in that match earlier this month when Matt Spector headed in a ball off a Joe Schiro corner kick. The Hawks held the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Anderson tied the match at 1-1 with a goal at the 60:00 mark, and Morath scored off an assist from Mike Poole at the 65:12 mark to give the Norse a 2-1 lead.

Anderson leads NKU in scoring with nine goals and five assists. Joaquin Palomeque has two goals and five assists, while Kevin Crone has scored four goals.

If NKU defeats Quincy in the first round, the Norse will travel to Edwardsville, Ill., to meet top-seeded Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in the GLVC semifinals. SIUE is 14-1-3 overall, 9-0-1 in the GLVC.

NKU qualified for the GLVC Tournament last season as the No. 5 seed and dropped a 2-0 decision at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the first round. The Norse are looking to win a match in the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 1997, when they upset Lewis in the opening round at Romeoville, Ill.
