Norse play Findlay in 2003 opener

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team will begin the 2003 season Aug. 30 with a 1 p.m. contest against the University of Findlay at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

NKU, which finished with a 6-10-2 record last season, will also meet Saginaw Valley State University at 4 p.m. on Aug. 31 at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The Norse are beginning their first season under head coach John Basalyga.

Basalyga led the Turpin High School boys’ soccer program to Ohio state championships in 1986, 2000 and 2001, and his teams produced 22 consecutive winning seasons. He compiled a 325-93-58 record at Turpin during the past 24 years.

NKU will travel to Ashland, Ohio, on Sept. 6 to meet Ashland University. The Norse return home the following weekend and will play host to perennial NCAA Division II powers Truman State University (Sept. 13) and Rockhurst University (Sept. 14).

NKU begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sept. 21 with a 2:30 p.m. home match against the University of Indianapolis. The Norse posted a 3-6-1 record in the GLVC a year ago and did not qualify for the GLVC Tournament.

NKU will return several key players from last season, including sophomore defender David Lies. The Norse must replace leading scorer Jeff Anderson, who netted 10 goals in 2002 and finished his career tied for fourth place on the NKU all-time scoring list with 37 goals.
