Parsons shoots 1-under-par 70 to lead Norse

UNION, Ky. - Brandon Parsons shot a 1-under-par 70 Tuesday as Northern Kentucky University rallied to take an eight-stroke lead going into the final round of play at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional at Lassing Pointe Golf Club.

NKU trailed first-round leader Grand Valley State University by four strokes going into Tuesday’s play, but the Norse finished with a score of 294 (+10) during the second round and now total 598 after 36 holes. Grand Valley State finished with a score of 306 Tuesday and is at 606 after two rounds, eight strokes behind NKU.

Parsons leads the individual competition after two rounds with a score of 145, one stroke ahead of teammate Jonathan Ehlen (146). Ehlen shot a 2-over-par 73 during the second round, and the Norse’s David Shearer completed Tuesday with a 72 and is tied for fourth place individually at 149.

Grand Valley State’s Bill Schmidt, the first-round leader after firing a 70, shot a 9-over-par 80 Tuesday and is tied for ninth place after 36 holes with a score of 150. Saginaw Valley State University is third in the team competition with a two-day total of 609, while Lewis University and Wayne (Mich.) State University are tied for fourth place at 614.

Missouri Southern State University (616) holds a six-stroke lead in the Central Regional, which is also being held at Lassing Pointe as part of the NCAA Super Regional. Washburn (Kan.) University totaled 306 Tuesday and is at 610 and in second place after two rounds.

Missouri Western State College’s Brice Garnett shot a 71 on Tuesday and is tied with Southwest Baptist University’s Nick Layman for first place in the individual competition with two-day totals of 147. Bret Toftness of Winona State University is tied with Matt Warnock of Washburn for third place with two-day totals of 150.

The final round is scheduled for Wednesday. The team champions of the Great Lakes Regional and the Central Regional, plus the top individuals not on those teams, will advance to the championship finals May 12-15 at Victoria Hills Country Club in DeLand, Fla.
