Former NKU basketball player returns to Columbus, Ga.

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Former Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball standout Carl Mitchell will play for the Columbus (Ga.) Riverdragons of the National Basketball Development League in the upcoming season.

Mitchell, who played at NKU from 2000-02, was one of two players allocated to the Riverdragons this week. The 6-foot-9 Mitchell - who was born in Columbus, Ga. - averaged 13.0 points per game and 6.8 rebounds for NKU last season and was named second team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse posted a 46-15 two-year record with Mitchell in the lineup, including a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2001.

The NBDL, the National Basketball Association’s minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), North Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Mobile Revelers (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), Greenville Groove (S.C.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA’s umbrella. Nine NBDL players and three NBDL coaches have been called up to the NBA since the start of the league’s inaugural season in November 2001.
