NKU OPENS SEASON WITH A VICTORY |

Norse defeat Ferris State, 79-71, in John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic |

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Craig Sanders scored 19 points Friday night as the Northern Kentucky University mens basketball team defeated Ferris State University, 79-71, in the first round of the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic. Carl Mitchell added 16 points and 11 rebounds as NKU (1-0) opened the 2001-02 season with a victory. NKU is now 20-0 all-time in the first round of the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic. Bobby St-Preux scored 14 points - all in the second half - as the Norse rallied from a 34-33 halftime deficit. NKU made 59.3 percent of its shots from the field in the second half to pull out the victory. NKU will meet Central State University - an 81-74 winner over Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University in the other first-round matchup - in the championship game at 7:45 p.m. Saturday night. Central State won the 1998 John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic title with an 86-82 victory over NKU in the championship game. |
