NKU DEFEATS WAYNE STATE, 78-74

Norse open season with victory in Disney Tip-Off Classic

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Junior forward Carl Mitchell scored 19 points and had nine rebounds Friday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball team defeated Wayne (Neb.) State College, 78-74, in the first round of the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic at the Wide World of Sports Fieldhouse.

NKU (1-0) shot 52.6 percent from the field and held off a late Wayne State rally to pick up the victory. Junior guard Craig Sanders scored 14 points for NKU, and senior forwards Todd Clark and Jeff McKinley both came off the bench and scored 11 points apiece.

NKU will meet Bentley (Mass.) College - which defeated Armstrong Atlantic (Ga.) on Friday - at 6 p.m. Saturday in the tournament semifinals.
