HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University mens basketball player Mike Kelsey and Norse mens tennis standout Amine Benjelloun have been selected as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Scholar Athletes of the Year in their respective sports. Kelsey, who will be a senior in 2004-05, averaged 16.9 points per game last season. He made a team-leading 83 three-point field goals and scored a school-record 50 points in a game against the University of Indianapolis on Jan. 2. Kelsey also earned Academic All-GLVC honors and was named second team All-GLVC as a junior. A graduate of Elder High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kelsey is a management major at NKU. Benjelloun, NKUs top tennis performer the past three seasons, was voted GLVC co-Player of the Year as a senior this past spring. It marked the second time in three seasons that Benjelloun earned that honor. Benjelloun led NKU to its second straight GLVC title this spring and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. He posted a 13-7 record in singles play, and he finished with a 14-6 mark in doubles competition. Benjelloun, an accounting major from Kenitra, Morocco, is a three-time member of the Academic All-GLVC Team. Kelsey and Benjelloun were also named GLVC Scholar Athletes of the Year in 2002-03. The GLVC selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year. This award is based upon academic excellence, academic performance, and athletic accomplishments. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets the Academic All-American standards, and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. |
