KELSEY EARNS GLVC WEEKLY HONOR

Norse junior guard named GLVC tri-Player of the Week

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s Mike Kelsey has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference tri-Player of the Week in men’s basketball.

Kelsey averaged 28 points per game - including a school-record 50 points against the University of Indianapolis last Friday - as the Norse won two of three contests. Kelsey’s 50-point performance shattered the previous NKU record of 43 points, set by Greg Phelia against Kentucky Wesleyan on Jan. 18, 1992.

Against Indianapolis, the junior guard was 16-for-25 from the field, including 9-of-13 shooting from three-point range. Kelsey’s 50 points were two shy of the GLVC record of 52 (set by Gary Paul of Indianapolis on Jan. 14, 1988, against NKU).

He also scored 39 points in the second half against Indianapolis and made three free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining to tie the game at 83-83 and force overtime. NKU eventually dropped a 95-92 decision to Indianapolis in that game.

During wins against Wayne (Mich.) State University and the College of Mount St. Joseph, Kelsey scored 17 points in each game. In three games, he averaged 28.0 points, shot 60 percent from the field and made 56 percent of his three-point attempts. Kelsey also made 94.1 percent of his free throws.

Kelsey is a graduate of Elder High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He shared the GLVC weekly award with Corey Seegers of Saint Joseph’s College and David Logan from Indianapolis.
