INDIANAPOLIS HOLDS OFF NKU IN OT, 95-92

No. 16 Greyhounds defeat Norse despite Kelsey’s school-record 50 points

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - David Logan scored six of his 44 points in overtime Friday night as unbeaten University of Indianapolis held off Northern Kentucky University, 95-92, in Regents Hall.

Logan’s performance offset a school-record 50 points by NKU’s Mike Kelsey, who made nine three-pointers and scored 39 points in the second half. The Norse rallied from a 17-point deficit in the first half and sent the game into overtime when Kelsey made three free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation after he was fouled attempting a three-pointer with Indianapolis holding an 83-80 lead.

Logan, a junior guard who entered the game averaging 19.4 points, gave Indianapolis an 86-83 lead early in the overtime period with a three-pointer. After the two teams traded baskets, Kelsey connected on a three-pointer to tie the game at 88-88 with 2:34 remaining.

Logan responded with a basket to give the Greyhounds a 90-88 lead, and Jason Wright powered his way for a score after an offensive rebound to increase the Indianapolis advantage to 92-88.

With 14 seconds left, Logan converted one of two free throws to give Indianapolis a 95-92 lead. NKU had a final chance to tie, but Jesse Rupe’s three-pointer rimmed out with two seconds left and 16th-ranked Indianapolis (12-0 overall, 5-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) escaped with the victory.

Kelsey’s 50-point performance shattered the previous NKU record of 43 points, set by Greg Phelia against Kentucky Wesleyan College on Jan. 18, 1992. The junior guard was 16-for-25 from the field, including 9-of-13 shooting from three-point range.

Several of Kelsey’s three-pointers were 25-foot jumpers coming off screens, and his 50 points were two points shy of the GLVC record of 52 (set by Gary Paul of Indianapolis on Jan. 14, 1988, against NKU).

Rupe added 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists for NKU (10-5 overall, 3-2 GLVC), and Adam Howell finished with 11 points. The Norse were 14-of-29 from three-point range and shot 48.4 percent from the field.

Indianapolis bolted to a 38-21 lead behind the shooting of Logan, who had 19 points in the first half. Kelsey, however, drained a trio of three-pointers before halftime as NKU whittled the Indianapolis lead to 41-32 at the break.

The Norse used a 19-5 run early in the second half to build a 56-51 lead with 12:20 remaining in the game. Kelsey scored 17 of NKU’s first 24 points in the second half.

Indianapolis responded with a 17-2 spurt to take a 68-58 lead with 6:56 left in the game. Kelsey, however, scored 15 points in the final six minutes as NKU forced overtime.

Kelsey now has 938 career points and is No. 27 on the Norse’s all-time scoring list. He has scored in double figures in 14 of NKU’s 15 games this season.

Wright finished with a double-double (15 points, 12 rebounds) for Indianapolis, while teammate Rodney Rollins added 13 points. The Greyhounds shot 52.1 percent from the field and forced NKU into 20 turnovers.

Indianapolis is tied with Lewis University - an 82-77 winner at top-ranked University of Southern Indiana on Friday - for first place in the GLVC standings.

NKU will play host to Kentucky Wesleyan College at 7:45 p.m. next Thursday night in Regents Hall.
