NKU DEFEATS BELLARMINE, 95-73

Kelsey scores 21 points to lead NKU

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Mike Kelsey scored a career-high 21 points Thursday night as the Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball team defeated Bellarmine University, 95-73, in Knights Hall.

Kelsey scored 18 points in the first half as NKU (17-6 overall, 13-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) built a 51-29 lead. Darnell Fields scored 10 of his career-high 19 points before halftime for the Norse, who shot 54.8 percent from the field in the opening half.

Carl Mitchell finished with 13 points for NKU, and Craig Sanders added 11 points. Sanders also extended his school-record streak of consecutive games in double figures to 43.

Brenden Stowers and Bobby St-Preux both scored 10 points for NKU, which is ranked No. 5 in the latest NCAA II Great Lakes Region poll. The top six teams will qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament in March.

NKU has now beaten Bellarmine 15 consecutive times, and the Norse have not lost in Knights Hall since the 1991-92 season.

The Norse will play a road game at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night against Kentucky Wesleyan College - the nation’s top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II poll - at the Owensboro Sportscenter.

NKU has not beaten Kentucky Wesleyan in the Owensboro Sportscenter since Feb. 11, 1988, when the Norse posted a 93-85 victory over the Panthers. Since then, NKU has dropped 15 consecutive games to KWC in the Owensboro Sportscenter.
