Smith gets double-double as Norse (8-0) remain unbeaten

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Quentin Smith scored a career-high 16 points and finished with 15 rebounds Saturday afternoon as Northern Kentucky University defeated Ohio Northern University, 68-47, in Regents Hall.

Jesse Rupe added 18 points and four rebounds as NKU improved to 8-0. Bobby St-Preux scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds as the Norse - ranked No. 6 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - rolled to the non-conference victory against the NCAA Division III Polar Bears.

NKU held Ohio Northern (2-6) scoreless for the first nine minutes of the game, but the Norse made just 37.9 percent of their shots in the first half and led by only a 30-15 score at intermission. Chris Seabrooks scored eight points and had six rebounds in the first half for NKU.

Rupe and St-Preux combined for 11 points at the start of the second half as NKU increased its advantage to 43-19, and the Norse led by as many as 27 points before coasting to the victory. NKU held Ohio Northern to 29.8 percent shooting from the field, and the Norse won the rebounding battle by a 44-30 margin.

Mike Kelsey had seven points and four assists for NKU, which has won 14 consecutive home games dating back to last season. The Norse have not lost in Regents Hall since Dec. 6, 2001, when Kentucky Wesleyan College posted a 64-62 win over NKU.

The best start to a season for NKU came during the 2000-01 campaign, when the Norse won their first 13 games. The streak ended at 13 when the University of Southern Indiana defeated NKU, 90-75, on Jan. 6, 2001, at Evansville, Ind.

NKU will hold “Ken Shields Bobblehead Doll Night” Monday night (Dec. 23) when the Norse take on Wayne (Mich.) State University at 7:45 p.m. in Regents Hall.

The first 1,000 fans in attendance for that game will receive a bobblehead doll of Norse men’s basketball head coach Ken Shields. The “Ken Shields Bobblehead Doll Night” is sponsored by Chris Boggs & Associates.
