BAYAMON, Puerto Rico - Sophomore forward Craig Sanders scored 22 points Saturday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University mens basketball team defeated Emporia (Kan.) State University, 77-47, in the first round of the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic.
The victory was No. 200 for NKU head coach Ken Shields, who is now 200-128 in 12 years with the Norse. Shields is the only NKU mens basketball coach to ever record 200 victories.
Sanders, a graduate of McNicholas High School in Cincinnati, made six three-point shots Saturday as NKU (7-1) rolled past ESU (5-3). The Norse connected on 16 of 34 attempts from three-point range and forced the Hornets into 25 turnovers.
NKU, ranked No. 7 nationally in the Division II Bulletin poll, will face Augustana (S.D.) College in the second round of the tournament at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
