NKU PLAYS HOST TO OHIO NORTHERN
Norse (7-0) jump to No. 6 in NCAA Division II national rankings
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University mens basketball team, which is unbeaten (7-0) and ranked No. 6 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, will play host to Ohio Northern University at 1 p.m. this Saturday in Regents Hall.
NKU improved to 7-0 on Dec. 7 with a 106-85 win at Bellarmine University. Brenden Stowers - who was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 9 - scored 23 points and dished out five assists in the victory at Bellarmine. Mike Kelsey added 18 points against the Knights. Chris Seabrooks scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Norse, who upped their GLVC record to 4-0. Seabrooks connected on 6 of 10 shots from the field and made all five of his free throw attempts.
Bobby St-Preux scored 13 points for NKU, while Quentin Smith added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Norse. Adam Howell also scored in double figures with 10 points.
BELLARMINE STREAK CONTINUES: The Norse have now beaten the Knights 16 consecutive times. Bellarmines last victory against NKU came on Feb. 3, 1994, when the Knights escaped with a 73-72 win in Regents Hall.
ATOP THE GLVC STANDINGS: NKU is in sole possession of first place in the GLVC standings with a 4-0 record. Lewis is in second place with a 3-1 record, followed by third-place Kentucky Wesleyan at 2-1.
LONG-RANGE BOMBERS: NKU sophomore guard Mike Kelsey ranks No. 2 in the GLVC in three-pointers made per game at 2.71. Kelsey has made 19 of 45 three-point attempts this season. Junior guard Adam Howell has connected on 15 of 31 three-pointers and ranks No. 6 in the GLVC in three-point shooting at 48.4 percent.
NORSE REMAIN ON TARGET: NKU is No. 1 in the GLVC in field goal percentage at 54.3 percent. The Norse are No. 3 in the GLVC in field goal percentage defense at 41.7 percent.
BENCH STRENGTH: The trio of Brenden Stowers, Quentin Smith and Adam Howell are providing NKU with an average of 35.0 points per game off the bench. Stowers leads NKU in scoring at 15.3 ppg, while Smith is also scoring in double figures at 11.4 ppg. Howell averages 8.3 ppg.
STOWERS NEARS 1,000 CAREER POINTS: Brenden Stowers enters Saturdays game against Ohio Northern with 917 career points.
ABOUT OHIO NORTHERN: The Polar Bears are 2-5 after dropping a 92-90 overtime decision at Defiance College on Wednesday. Ohio Northern is an NCAA Division III school.
Junior guard Jim Conrad - who scored 32 points in the loss to Defiance on Wednesday - leads the Polar Bears in scoring at 16.1 points per game. Conrad has made 86.5 percent of his free throws and is tied for the team lead with 10 steals.
Senior guard Aaron Fries averages 13.6 ppg, and he has made 27 of 68 three-point attempts. Junior center Sam Mikolajewski averages 10.6 ppg and 9.7 rebounds per contest.
Ohio Northern won the NCAA Division III national championship in 1993.
KEN SHIELDS BOBBLEHEAD DOLL NIGHT ON MONDAY: NKU will hold Ken Shields Bobblehead Doll Night next Monday night (Dec. 23) when the Norse take on Wayne (Mich.) State University at 7:45 p.m. in Regents Hall.
