Norse fall to 6-3 with loss on the road |

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Phillip Hammons and Rico Grier combined for 44 points Sunday afternoon as the Pfeiffer (N.C.) University mens basketball team upset Northern Kentucky University, 97-87, at Merner Gymnasium. Hammons scored 24 points and Grier added 20 as Pfeiffer (4-3) defeated NKU, which entered the game ranked No. 21 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. The Falcons shot 55.2 percent from the field and made 12 of 26 three-point attempts to post the victory. NKU (6-3) rallied from an early 13-point deficit to forge a 47-47 halftime on Craig Sanders layup at the buzzer. NKU eventually took a 65-61 lead in the second half, but Pfeiffer used a 23-6 run to build an 84-71 advantage. Grier scored eight points to key the 23-6 run for Pfeiffer, and Hammons hit a pair of three-pointers during the decisive spurt. Bobby St-Preux scored a career-high 29 points to lead NKU, and Carl Mitchell added 19 points. Sanders finished with 16 points for the Norse and has now scored in double figures in 29 consecutive games dating back to last season. The NKU record for consecutive games in double figures is 39, set by Brady Jackson. NKU will conclude its two-game road trip in North Carolina Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. contest at Wingate (N.C.) University. |
