GLVC BASKETBALL POLLS RELEASED

NKU women picked second; Norse men tabbed third

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team is picked second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason coaches poll, which was released Thursday by the GLVC.

NKU posted a 25-5 record last season and returns seven letterwinners from that team. The Norse received 93 total points and four first-place votes, while preseason favorite University of Southern Indiana had 95 total points and six first-place votes.

NKU features senior forward Michelle Cottrell, the 2000-01 Division II Bulletin National Player of the Year. Cottrell - the two-time GLVC Player of the Year - averaged 17.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game as a junior.

The NKU men, who finished with a 27-7 record last year, are picked third in the GLVC preseason poll. Defending NCAA Division II national champion Kentucky Wesleyan College is picked to capture its fifth consecutive GLVC championship. The Panthers are also the nation’s consensus No. 1 team in various preseason publications.

NKU returns first team All-GLVC selection Craig Sanders (17.6 ppg) and senior forward Carl Mitchell (12.3 ppg) in 2001-02. The Norse also add 6-foot-5 guard Bobby St-Preux - who sat out as a redshirt last season - and 6-8 junior college transfer Darnell Fields to the lineup in 2001-02.

Southern Indiana is tabbed No. 2 in the GLVC men’s poll.
