HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University athletic director Jane Meier announced Wednesday that Carlos Chia has been selected as the Norse volleyball programs head coach. Chia, who has served as an assistant coach at NKU since 1994, takes over a program that has advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament the past four seasons. NKU has also won four straight Great Lakes Valley Conference titles. Chia replaces Mary Biermann, who retired as head coach following the 2000 season. The Norse posted a 27-7 record this past season in Biermanns final year as head coach. Prior to coming to NKU, Chia served as a volleyball coach at Mount Notre Dame High School in Cincinnati and helped the team capture the 1991 district championship in southwest Ohio. Chia was head coach at Thomas More College from 1988-90, and he also coached Junior Olympic volleyball for five years. An avid volleyball player, Chia was a member of the 1972 Peruvian National Team that placed fourth at the first-ever South American Championships in Brazil. |
