Norse defeat top-seeded Indianapolis in GLVC Tournament

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Justin Rahschulte’s run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning Thursday snapped a 3-3 tie as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team knocked off the University of Indianapolis, 5-3, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Indianapolis entered the GLVC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, but NKU junior right-hander Lenny Bays limited the Greyhounds to five hits en route to the complete game victory. Sixth-seeded NKU improved to 37-19 overall, while Indianapolis - ranked No. 10 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - dropped to 44-13.

NKU built a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but Indianapolis tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh with two out, NKU’s Chris Osterkamp singled and advanced to second on a passed ball.

After a wild pitch by Indianapolis starter Blake Wyatt sent Osterkamp to third, Rahschulte snapped the 3-3 tie with an RBI single. NKU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Rahschulte tripled to right-center field, driving in Devin Brown for a 5-3 lead.

NKU advances to the second round of the double-elimination tournament and will meet the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 1:15 p.m. Friday. Wisconsin-Parkside lost to the University of Southern Indiana, 4-2, in another first-round game Thursday.
