NKU FACES 10TH-RANKED INDY

Norse 31-11 heading into Wednesday doubleheader at Indianapolis (33-10)

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team is now 31-11 after sweeping a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday.

Matt Mason’s two-run home run in the eighth inning gave NKU a 5-4 win over Wisconsin-Parkside in the first game of the doubleheader. NKU completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory in the second game. The Norse, now 9-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, will travel to play the University of Indianapolis this Wednesday in a GLVC doubleheader.

Indianapolis (33-10) is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA II North Central Region ratings and No. 10 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. The Greyhounds (14-1 GLVC) lead the GLVC North Division by five games.

NKU is ranked No. 5 in the North Central Region, but the Norse figure to vault past No. 4 Wisconsin-Parkside after defeating the Rangers three times over the weekend.

NKU defeated Indianapolis, 7-4, in their only other meeting this season at Highland Heights, Ky.

MASON LEADS GLVC IN HOMERS: Mason, a graduate of Highlands High School, leads the GLVC with 11 home runs. He needs seven home runs to tie the NKU single-season record of 18, which was set in 1990 by John Heeter. Mason also has a team-leading 46 runs batted in, and he is hitting .412 with 14 doubles.

LOOKING FOR 40: NKU is on pace to win 40 games, something the Norse have not done since the 1989 season. That year, NKU posted a 45-9 record and hosted the NCAA Division II Regional.

MARTIN REMAINS TORRID: Junior catcher Jason Martin leads NKU in hitting with a .421 batting average. Martin, a graduate of Oak Hills High School, also has seven home runs and 40 RBI.

NORSE NOTES: Junior designated hitter Beau Brake is batting .402 with 14 RBI. Junior right fielder Steve Walton has eight home runs, 34 RBI and he is batting .355. Walton’s eight homers rank No. 2 in the GLVC.

NKU junior right-hander Josh Whaley is 7-2 with a 2.74 earned run average. Whaley also has 59 strikeouts. Junior right-hander Lenny Bays is 6-1 with a 3.46 ERA. Bays also leads NKU with 63 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. Senior closer Shaun Fausz has six saves and a 4.09 ERA. Sophomore right-hander Chaz Goetz is 6-1 with a 4.35 ERA.

In addition to playing at Indianapolis on Wednesday, NKU will also hit the road this weekend for GLVC doubleheaders at the University of Southern Indiana (1 p.m. Saturday) and No. 25 Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (1 p.m. Sunday).
