NKU WINS GLVC BASEBALL TITLE

Martin’s record-breaking hit keys 5-3 win

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Jason Martin’s run-scoring single in the eighth inning Sunday snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted Northern Kentucky University to a 5-3 win over Saint Joseph’s College in the championship game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Martin, a graduate of Oak Hills High School, also became NKU’s all-time career hits leader with that single in the eighth inning. Martin now has 264 career hits with the Norse, who improved to 35-22 with the victory.

Chris Osterkamp added two hits and two RBI for NKU, which won its first-ever GLVC Tournament championship. Keith Jackson added three hits and an RBI, while Richie Jones scored a pair of runs for the Norse.

Chad Anderson pitched 2 1/3 innings of two-hit baseball in relief and picked up the victory. Anderson also had three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

NKU - which has won 17 of its last 20 games - is ranked No. 25 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Pairings for the NCAA Division II Tournament will be announced late Sunday night, and the Norse are expected to receive a berth in the North Central Region.

Ashland University is currently ranked No. 1 in the North Central Region poll, and NKU is rated No. 2. The top four teams in the poll advance to the NCAA Tournament.
