NKU SPLITS WITH BELLARMINE

Wiedeman, Moeves lead Norse to 4-3 win in opener

AMELIA, Ohio - Derrik Moeves pitched two innings of scoreless relief Wednesday to notch his first save of the season as Northern Kentucky University held off Bellarmine University, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader at Midland Field.

NKU starter Matt Wiedeman went five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) before Moeves came on in relief in the sixth. Moeves, normally NKU’s No. 1 starter, allowed just one hit in two innings and finished with two strikeouts.

Wiedeman picked up the victory and upped his record to 8-1 this spring. He also finished with four strikeouts.

Justin Mundt went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for NKU, which took advantage of four errors by Bellarmine. Lewis Jones had a hit and an RBI for the Norse.

In the nightcap, Jason Bibelhauser tossed a five-hit shutout as Bellarmine posted a 4-0 win over NKU. Bibelhauser struck out 10 batters and walked just one en route to the complete-game victory.

NKU is now 29-23 overall, 22-14 in the GLVC and in third place in the league standings. The Norse have clinched a spot in next week’s GLVC Tournament at Sauget, Ill., which begins on May 6.

The top six teams in the standings qualify for the GLVC Tournament.

NKU also moved up to fourth in the latest NCAA Division II North Central Region ratings. The top four teams in that poll will qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament in May.

NKU will conclude the regular season this weekend with a four-game series against the University of Southern Indiana. The two teams will play noon doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field.
