MOEVES EARNS GLVC WEEKLY HONOR

NKU sophomore named GLVC Pitcher of the Week for second time

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s Derrik Moeves has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Moeves, a sophomore right-hander and a graduate of Highlands High School, tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out 12 batters Saturday as NKU defeated the University of Southern Indiana, 1-0. Moeves also set a Norse single-season record for strikeouts with 96.

The previous NKU mark was 85, set by Mike Kichler in 1997.

In addition, Moeves extended his streak of scoreless innings pitched to 15 straight. He has also not allowed an earned run in the past 28 innings and has a 1.62 earned run average this spring.

Earlier in the week, Moeves pitched two innings of scoreless relief to notch his first save of the season as NKU held off Bellarmine University, 4-3.

For the week, Moeves was 1-0, pitched nine innings in two appearances with a 0.00 ERA, had 14 strikeouts and did not allow a walk.

This marks the second straight week Moeves has earned the honor for NKU, which will begin play at the GLVC Tournament at 1 p.m. this Thursday against Saint Joseph’s College.

NKU (33-23 overall) is the No. 2 seed in the GLVC Tournament, which is being played at Sauget, Ill.
