NKU DEFEATS QUINCY, 6-5

Osterkamp’s RBI single gives Norse road victory

QUINCY, Ill. - Chris Osterkamp’s run-scoring single in the eighth inning snapped a 5-5 tie Sunday and gave Northern Kentucky University a 6-5 win over Quincy University at Quincy Stadium.

Quincy held a 5-4 lead going into the eighth, but NKU’s Ben Gulleman opened the inning with a single. Sean Ryan pinch ran for Gulleman and stole second, and he later scored on an error by left fielder Kevin Sewell after a single by Conor McGeehan.

Steve Kolcun sacrificed McGeehan to third base, and he scored the go-ahead run when Osterkamp singled to right field.

Justin Seiter pitched the final two innings and recorded his sixth save of the season. Chris Unkraut picked up the victory in relief of starter Dizzy Peyton.

NKU improved to 23-22 overall, 14-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse are now in sixth place in the conference standings, and the top six teams in the GLVC standings will qualify for the GLVC Tournament.

The Norse will conclude their GLVC schedule next weekend with a three-game series at the University of Southern Indiana. NKU will likely need to win at least two of those games at Southern Indiana to earn a berth in the GLVC Tournament.

Saint Joseph’s College (13-13 GLVC) is in seventh place in the GLVC standings, while Kentucky Wesleyan College is 13-14 in the conference. NKU, however, is down tiebreakers to both Saint Joseph’s and Kentucky Wesleyan, and the Norse must finish ahead of both to qualify for the GLVC Tournament.
