Norse now 19-13 after split on the road


FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Brandon Smith’s run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning drove home Matt Mason with the winning run Sunday as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team rallied to defeat Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne, 8-6, in the second game of a doubleheader.

Justin Rahschulte later added an insurance run with an RBI double as NKU gained a split of the doubleheader on Sunday. In the opener, IPFW used a 14-hit attack to defeat NKU, 12-1.

Jason Martin hit a pair of home runs and had four RBI in the second game as NKU improved to 19-13 overall, 4-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Chad Lubbe had three hits for the Norse, and Mason added a home run for NKU.

The victory in the second game was NKU head coach Bill Aker’s 798th career win with the Norse. Aker can reach 800 this Tuesday afternoon when NKU plays host to Kentucky State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Friendship Field.

IPFW dropped to 8-17, 2-9 in the GLVC.
