SIUE SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER FROM NKU

Norse now 26-25 after losing twice to SIUE

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Sophomore pitcher Dave Crouthers allowed Northern Kentucky University just three hits and helped his own cause at the plate by driving in three runs as Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville defeated the Norse, 7-1, in the first game of a doubleheader at Friendship Field on Sunday.

Crouthers, who plays the outfield when he is not pitching, helped SIUE sweep the doubleheader by adding two hits in the second game as the Cougars edged NKU, 5-4. SIUE improved to 29-20 overall, 17-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

NKU (26-25, 8-16 GLVC) took a 2-1 lead in the second game when sophomore first baseman Steve Walton hit a two-run home run in the first inning. SIUE, however, rallied for a run in the second inning and two runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

NKU eventually tied the game at 4-4 on an RBI single by Lenny Bays in the fourth inning. SIUE broke the tie in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Steve Berra that scored Crouthers with the go-ahead run.
