WILDER, Ky.
- The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team scored
two goals in the final five minutes of regulation to hold off Southern
Indiana, 3-2, at the Town & Country Sports Complex on Sunday
afternoon.
After Meagan
Kempf’s goal at the 77:02 mark allowed Southern Indiana to
tie the score at 1-all, NKU’s Kara Costello countered by finding
the back of the net with her fourth marker of the season in the
85th minute. Both Kendall Day and Brandi Doss assisted Costello’s
goal, a close-in shot that went past Southern Indiana keeper Stephanie
Bodamer.
Lauren Franzen
gave NKU a 3-1 lead in the 88th minute by netting her second goal
of the game. Kempf tallied another goal at the 88:29 mark to bring
Southern Indiana within 3-2, but the NKU defense held on during
the final minute to post the victory.
NKU finished
with a 15-10 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Norse goalie Angela Healy collected three saves and recorded the
victory.
NKU, which is
ranked 24th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to
10-2 overall. The Norse are 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Southern Indiana
dropped to 4-9 overall, 1-7 in the GLVC. The Screaming Eagles have
not defeated NKU since 1999.
NKU hits the
road for a GLVC contest at Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday. The Norse
conclude the trip Sunday with a game at Bellarmine. NKU returns
home Oct. 26 to meet Indianapolis on Senior Day at the Town &
Country Sports Complex.
