LEXINGTON,
Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s Liz Holmes has been named
the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division
II National Player of the Week, the AVCA announced Monday.
Holmes, a graduate
of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, averaged 6.1 kills per game
and attacked at a .474 clip last week to lead NKU to a pair of wins.
Holmes also became the Norse's all-time career kills leader Friday
night when she converted an attack in the third game during a win
against Drury.
Holmes began
the week with 16 kills, 11 digs and a .429 hitting percentage during
a sweep of Rockhurst. She capped her week by hitting .512 with 27
kills and 16 digs as the Norse knocked off Drury.
Holmes, who
averaged a double-double (21.5 kills, 13.5 digs) in the two matches,
now has 1,714 career kills. She entered last week tied for the national
lead in hitting percentage.
This is the
fifth time in history an NKU player has received the honor from
the AVCA, and the first since Kristin Koralewski earned the recognition
in 2004. Koralewski also was named AVCA National Player of the Week
in 2003. Bethany Gastright (2000) and Jenny Jeremiah (1999) also
have earned the honor for NKU.
NKU (21-5 overall,
10-3 GLVC) plays host to Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. Friday in Regents
Hall. The Norse's four seniors - Holmes, Brittany Dixon, Elizabeth
Droessler and Tristen Dye - will be recognized prior to the match
in Senior Night festivities.
The following
day at 3 p.m., GLVC-leading Indianapolis - which has won 20 consecutive
matches and is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes
Region poll - visits Regents Hall. The Greyhounds are currently
23-1 overall and are unbeaten (13-0) in the GLVC.
Indianapolis
has beaten NKU five consecutive times dating back to 2005. Earlier
this season, the Greyhounds took a four-game decision against the
Norse at Indianapolis.
NKU is ranked
25th nationally in the latest NCAA Division II poll, while Indianapolis
is No. 18.
