RENSSELAER, Ind. – A five-run seventh inning was not enough for the Northern Kentucky University softball team to come back against Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday. The Norse dropped both ends of the doubleheader, 4-3 and 6-5.
The Norse (20-20, 8-10 Great Lakes Valley Conference) jumped out to an early lead on the back of an RBI-single by Gretchen Lorenz in the second inning. Cara Parker’s run-scoring triple in the third, followed by Shatona Campbell’s RBI-double, shot the Norse to a 3-0 lead.
Saint Joseph’s (24-14, 12-6 GLVC) stormed back with four straight RBI-singles in the bottom of the third inning to take the one-run advantage. The Norse got runners in scoring position in the next three innings, but could not push the tying run home.
Lorenz was 2-for-2 on the game, while Parker, Campbell and April Ehlers all had two hits on the game.
Game 2 was a complete different story as the Pumas struck with a five-run third inning, thanks largely to Rachel Weaver’s three-run home run. Saint Joseph’s scored another run in the fourth to push the lead to six.
The Norse mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases before Lorenz reached on a fielding error to score NKU’s first run of the game. Jessica Farris responded with her second home run of the season, a grand slam that punctuated a 2-for-4 performance and brought the Norse within one. However, Amanda Smith would fly out to second base to end the game.
Ehlers (10-12) struck out six Puma batters in the loss.
NKU returns home on Saturday to host Lewis in a GLVC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon. |
