HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University softball
team claimed its first win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play
on Saturday with a 10-2 run-rule victory over Rockhurst in Game 2
of a doubleheader.
Back-to-back doubles by Jessica Farris and Amanda
Smith in the third inning gave the Norse the early advantage before
tearing the game
wide open in a six-run fourth inning. Cara Parker started things
off with a leadoff triple, scoring on Ashley Gates' single up the
middle. The hit started a string of six consecutive singles by
NKU batters, with Gretchen Lorenz and Rose Broderick claiming RBIs
and
Farris driving in two-runs in the inning. Smith's sacrifice fly
to score Broderick ended the scoring for the Norse.
The Hawks (8-7,
3-3 GLVC) got two runs in the top of the sixth on a Lindsay Williams
double before the Norse closed things out
in the
bottom half of the frame after a bases-loaded two-run single
by Jamie Raabe followed by an RBI-double by Parker pushed the advantage
to
eight, triggering the game-ending run-rule.
Farris and Parker
each had 3-for-4 games, with all three of Parker's hits going for
extra bases, while Gates, Broderick and Smith
had two hits each.
Chelsie Roy (5-4) got the win in the circle,
going six innings allowing just four hits and two runs, one earned.
Emily Dye
(4-2) took the
loss for Rockhurst.
The win balanced out a heart-wrenching
3-0 loss for the Norse in Game 1.
All three runs given up by April
Ehlers (6-7) went unearned as the Hawks claimed two in the first
inning and another
in the
third. Ehlers
also claimed nine strikeouts while giving up just four
hits.
The NKU offense managed seven hits on the game but could
not put together a run, stranding seven runners on
base.
Shatona Campbell was the lone standout in Game 1, going
2-for-3 on the contest.
NKU is now 11-11 on the season,
including a 1-3 mark in GLVC play.
The Norse continue the six-game
homestand on Sunday with a doubleheader against Drury. First pitch
is scheduled for noon. |
