SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - It is rare when a softball team can commit five errors and allow six runs - in the first inning - and come away with a victory. Northern Kentucky University accomplished just that on Saturday, defeating Drury by a score of 14-9 to close out a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader. Drury was victorious in Game 1, 7-2.

After the ill-fated start, the Norse got on the board in the third with a two-run single from Katybeth Coode followed by an RBI single from April Ehlers. Drury scored one in the bottom of the third before Cara Parker slapped her fourth home run of the season over the center-field wall in the fifth inning to score herself and Coode. NKU got two more on a booted ball by the Drury shortstop to tie the game at seven.

Drury got a pair of two-out RBIs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead, which the Norse whittled to one on an RBI-double from Shatona Campbell in the sixth. The Norse took the lead for good in the top of the seventh, tying the game on Amanda Smith's RBI-double, and taking the lead with Ehlers' two-out RBI-single. NKU got four more two-out RBIs to reach the final score.

Coode, Ehlers and Parker each came away with three hits on the game as eight NKU starters claimed at least two hits. April Ehlers (8-12) got the win in relief, striking out three in 2 1/3 innings of work. Ehlers
also took the loss in Game 1, working into the second inning giving up six earned runs.

Drury scored three runs each in the first two innings to take Game 1, 7-2. The Norse attempted to come back with a sacrifice fly from Rose Broderick in the fifth and an RBI-single from Campbell in the sixth, but NKU just couldn't overcome the early obstacle.

Northern Kentucky (18-22, 7-11 GLVC) closes out the weekend road trip tomorrow afternoon at Rockhurst. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
