HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Goose eggs, zero, zip, zilch, and nada are all words that can describe the amount of runs Northern Kentucky University pitchers April Ehlers and Chelsea Roy gave up to West Liberty State College in an afternoon doubleheader on Wednesday.

NKU scored early and often in each game to defeat the Hilltoppers from WLSC (10-20) by scores of 8-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule fashion in Game 1 and 7-0 in Game 2.

Ehlers (7-11), a freshman from Greenville, Ind., was masterful in the circle for the Norse (17-21) as she allowed just one hit while striking out five and didn’t allow a walk. The right-hander faced just one more than the minimum in her first shutout as a Norse hurler.

Roy (4-4), a graduate of Grant County High School, also picked up her first career shutout for the Norse, going all seven innings and allowing seven hits while striking out one and walking one.

Offensively in Game 1, eight out of the nine starters pounded out hits with seven batters driving at least one run.

Stephanie West and Amanda Smith each collected multi-hit games. West was 3-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base while Smith was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

Shatona Campbell provided the proverbial nail-in-the-coffin with a blast deep over the left-field fence in the third inning. The homerun was her third of the season.

Game 2 started with a cardinal sin committed by the 1-2-3 hitters for WLSC. Roy hurled only three pitches in the inning and got the Topper hitter to ground into three outs.

Katybeth Coode provided all the offense that NKU would need and she singled up the middle to score Rose Broderick from third. Broderick, who had singled earlier in the inning, ended the day going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, one RBI, and two stolen bases.

Campbell was the only other Norse batter to pick up a multi-hit game going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Norse will now travel away from the friendly confines of the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field as they embark on a long, arduous trip to Missouri for four games this weekend. They will take on the Drury Panthers in Springfield, Mo. on Saturday and the Rockhurst Hawks on Sunday. First pitch for each day is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT.
