---Sam Del Vecchio's clutch pinch-hit RBI-single sparked a four-run fifth inning and led the Norse to a 6-3 victory in Game 1.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team gained a split of a doubleheader with Indianapolis on Sunday, winning the opener by a 6-3 score and later dropping a 2-1 decision at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.

NKU pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in the opener to snap a 2-all tie and coasted to the win. Sam Del Vecchio and Katybeth Coode each had run-scoring singles in the fifth inning to spark the Norse, who ended Indianapolis’ six-game winning streak.

Coode went 3-for-3 with three RBI, including her 10th home run of the season, in the opener. Coode’s 10 homers are the most in Norse single-season history.

Rose Broderick went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs for NKU. Broderick led off the third inning with a double and later scored when Coode blasted a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-all.

April Ehlers scattered six hits over five innings and picked up the victory for the Norse. Ehlers also struck out six batters. Chelsie Roy recorded the save by going the final two innings.

In the nightcap, Indianapolis plated an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning to post a 2-1 victory. NKU’s Amanda Smith collected three strikeouts and just one earned run in seven innings.

NKU is 15-21 overall, 6-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Indianapolis is 26-19 overall, 12-5 in the GLVC.

NKU returns to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. by hosting West Liberty State in a non-conference doubleheader at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
