---Amanda Smith was 2-for-4 in each game of Saturday's doubleheader, while picking up the shutout victory in Game 2.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Amanda Smith tossed a six-hit shutout as Northern Kentucky University posted a 4-0 win over Saint Joseph’s to gain a split of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.

Katybeth Coode provided the offensive punch with a two-run homer in the first inning as NKU improved to 14-20 overall, 5-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Coode blasted her ninth home run of the season on a 3-1 pitch from Saint Joseph’s starter Jessie Privett to give the Norse a 2-0 lead, and that was all Smith needed.

Coode’s nine home runs are a Norse single-season record. She is a junior outfielder from Louisville, Ky.

Smith added two hits and an RBI for NKU. The Norse bounced back after suffering a 4-3 loss in the opener Saturday against the Pumas.

Saint Joseph’s (13-19, 5-8 GLVC) plated the winning run in the top of the seventh inning on Stephanie Kickel’s RBI single up the middle with two out. Smith, Coode and Stephanie West each collected two hits for NKU, while Cara Parker added a solo home run.

NKU returns to action Sunday at noon with a GLVC doubleheader against Indianapolis at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
