HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team suffered a setback on Sunday, losing two to Missouri S&T in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

In Game 1, Emily Tucker got the Miners (18-11, 9-1 GLVC) on the board in the top of the first with a three-run homer to set the tone. The Miners added one more in the third and four each in the fourth and fifth to cruise to a 12-4 run-rule decision.

Cara Parker broke out of her hitting slump in the game, going 2-for-2 with a double and her first home run of the season.

Amanda Smith (4-3) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

S&T struck first in Game 2 as well when Katie Smith laced a two-out single to right-center field in the second inning. The Norse got the run back in the fourth when April Ehlers perfectly executed the squeeze to score Rose Broderick, who had singled to lead off the inning.

The Miners went ahead for good in the fifth on Kristen Drage’s three-run homer, her first of the season, to make the 4-1 final score.

Ehlers (3-9) struck out 10 batters in the loss.

Northern Kentucky (9-15, 3-5 GLVC) travels to face Ashland in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
