HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University softball team won a pair of very close games Saturday, taking a doubleheader sweep against Missouri-St. Louis to draw level in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

In Game 1, April Ehlers’ single in the bottom of the 11th inning gaver her a 3-for-3 finish and set up the game-winning play. Chelsea Toler laced a rocket shot on the first pitch of the at bat to center field that Megan Brussman just couldn’t handle, allowing Gretchen Lorenz to score for the 2-1 final decision.

Amanda Smith (4-2) went the distance, striking out seven in 11 innings of work. Katybeth Coode added her fourth home run of the season for the Norse.

Amanda Smith opened the scoring in Game 2, benefiting from an RBI base-on-balls to score Toler in the third inning. Krista Smith added an RBI single in the fourth and later scored on a Triton error to give the Norse the early 3-0 lead.

UMSL got two back in the top of the sixth, but could not find the equalizer as the Norse took the victory, 3-2.

April Ehlers (3-8) got the win with eight strikeouts. Chelsie Roy threw two pitches in the top of the seventh to earn her first save of the season.

The Norse close out the weekend home stand against Missouri S&T on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
