DAHLONEGA, Ga.
- The Northern Kentucky University softball squad picked up its
first win in the Ryan's Classic, defeating King (Tenn.), 7-1, before
falling to host North Georgia, 7-4.
Cara Parker
and Becky Napier each had 3-for-4 performances at the plate in day
two's opening game. Amanda Smith and Krista Smith each picked up
doubles in the seventh inning as NKU pulled away.
Freshman pitcher
Karen Simmons (2-1) pitch six strong innings, allowing just one
run on seven hits and picking up three strikeouts. Candace White
earned her second save of the season in an unusual way, entering
a six-run game with the bases loaded before sending the Tornadoes
down in order.
NKU's second
game started with promise as Rose Broderick hit her sixth home run
of the season, and her third to lead off a game, to put the Norse
on the board against North Georgia. The teams went back and forth
until the bottom of the fifth, when Brittany Cobb's eighth home
run of the year capped a three-run inning for the Saints.
Amanda Smith
(8-9) gave up seven runs on eight hits in the loss, striking out
five along the way. Andrea Moss (16-4) got the win in relief for
North Georgia, pitching a scoreless 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
NKU moves to
19-15 overall and 1-3 in the Ryan's Classic. NKU returns to conference
play next weekend as it travels to Southern Indiana and Southern
Illinois at Edwardsville.
