DAHLONEGA, Ga.
- The Northern Kentucky University softball team had a rough start
to the Ryan's Classic on the campus of North Georgia College and
State University on Friday, dropping a 5-3 decision to Lincoln Memorial
before falling to Augusta State, 4-1.
LMU's Sarah
Henn blasted a pair of home runs, including a walk-off, two-run
shot, to defeat the Norse in NKU's first game of the day. Henn finished
2-for-4 on the day and drove in four of the Railsplitters' five
runs. Cara Parker was the offensive standout for the Norse, going
2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Amanda Smith
(8-8) took the loss for NKU, despite equaling a season-high with
six strikeouts. Brittney Walker (11-5) gave up four hits and just
one earned run to post the win for LMU.
Shatona Campbell
scored NKU's only run in the top of the first against Augusta State
on a throwing error before the Jaguars came back with four unanswered
runs. Jessie Sadlowsky's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second
inning to score Beth Gerlach put Augusta State ahead for good.
Amy Dumas (12-7)
picked up the win as she allowed just one hit but walked seven while
striking out 11 NKU batters. Freshman Karen Simmons (1-1) took the
loss, giving up three hits and two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings
pitched. Candace White came on in relief for the Norse and struck
out four in 3 2/3 innings.
NKU dropped
to 18-14 overall and stands at 0-2 in the Ryan's Classic going into
day two, when the Norse will face King College and host North Georgia.
