LOUISVILLE –
The Northern Kentucky University softball team scored five runs
in the top of the seventh inning to take a come-from-behind 16-12
win over Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Bellarmine on Thursday
in the first game of a doubleheader.
Senior Becky
Napier hit her second home run of the season to key the late comeback,
finishing the game 2-for-5 with three runs batted in. Jenny Weis
continued her torrid hitting streak, going 4-for-5 with three RBI.
Rose Broderick
and Amber Gregory each had 3-for-5 games for the Norse, who trailed
12-11 going into their final at-bat. Amanda Smith (9-12) picked
up the win in relief, giving up just one earned run on 12 hits in
4 1/3 innings of work.
Bellarmine won
the nightcap in run-rule fashion, 11-3. Napier wasn't done with
her offensive display, going 3-for-3 with a solo homer, but it wasn't
enough to keep pace with the Knights, who had eight of their starting
nine pick up at least two hits.
Candace White
(11-7) was saddled with the loss, surrendering 14 hits in five innings
while striking out four. Sharon Brill (8-10) recorded the complete-game
victory for Bellarmine.
The doubleheader
split leaves NKU with a 22-20 record, and a 7-9 slate in GLVC play.
The Norse return
home for a day before heading out again for a weekend of conference
doubleheaders against Saint Joseph's and Indianapolis.
