HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University softball team made quick work of Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Rockhurst in the nightcap Sunday, needing just five innings to defeat the Hawks 10-1 to earn a split of a doubleheader at the Frank Ignatius Grein Field.

After Rockhurst picked up a run in the top of the first inning, NKU responded with 10 unanswered runs to end the game early. NKU scored in each of its four innings at the plate.

Jenny Weis was a perfect 5-for-5 on the day with five runs scored and six stolen bases in the doubleheader. Cara Parker went 2-for-2 in the win with an RBI triple in the first inning.

Segille Melton notched her first career extra-base hit in the nightcap with an RBI double in her only official at-bat of the game. Candace White (11-6) recorded the win, scattering seven hits and striking out five in five innings of work.

The win put a positive note on what started out as a rough day. The Norse surrendered four runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to drop the first game, 9-4.

Kristen Benes opened the scoring for Rockhurst with her first home run of the season, a towering shot down the left-field line. NKU came back with one each in the second and third innings, and a two-spot in the fifth before Rockhurst rallied.

Becky Napier had a 3-for-4 game at the plate, including a pair of RBI. Amanda Smith helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 performance.

Smith (8-12) gave up seven earned runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings to shoulder the loss. Karen Simmons came in relief to close out the seventh inning.

NKU is 21-19 overall, 6-8 in the GLVC. NKU hits the road to take on GLVC rival Bellarmine on Thursday before a weekend road trip to Saint Joseph’s and Indianapolis.
