Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s Amanda Smith has been
named Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week in softball,
the league office announced Monday.
Smith, a freshman from Canal Winchester, Ohio, posted a 3-0 record
and allowed just two earned runs last week. Smith hurled a three-hitter
at Quincy during a 6-1 win on Saturday, and she came back and pitched
1 1/3 innings in the nightcap as NKU pulled off the sweep with a
Smith picked up a 10-2 win over Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday for
her 19th victory of the season. She is now 19-9 this season and
is looking to become just the second freshman in Norse history to
reach the 20-win plateau.
Emily Breitholle also won 20 games as a freshman in 2002.
The Norse wrapped
up the regular season with a 35-17 overall record, including a 15-9
mark in the GLVC. NKU will be the No. 6 seed in the GLVC Tournament,
which begins Friday at East Peoria, Ill. The Norse will meet No.
3 seed Lewis at 10 a.m. (CDT) in the first round of the double-elimination
