WILDER, Ky. – Lauren Franzen’s goal with 14 seconds
remaining in the second overtime gave the Northern Kentucky University
women’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Bellarmine in Great
Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday afternoon.
In what would likely
have been the final offensive push of the game for the Norse,
defender Katie Guinn took a long clearance
attempt from the Bellarmine defense and turned upfield. She sent
the ball ahead to Cara Alldred, who flicked ahead to Kendall Day.
Day
found Franzen for a two-on-one breakaway. Franzen elected to take
the shot and put it low to the left post for the winning goal
at the 109:46 mark.
The goal was Franzen’s
fifth of the year and her second game-deciding tally.
It was a measure of redemption
for Guinn, whose foul inside the NKU penalty area set up a Bellarmine
penalty kick in the 36th minute.
Caitlin Duffy stepped up and converted to give the Knights the
early 1-0 lead.
NKU defender Caitlin
Mueller squared the game at one-all in the 72nd minute, knocking
a header home off of Amy Martini’s
corner kick for her first collegiate goal.
The Norse dominated play
for most of the game, outshooting the Knights 22-4 overall and
turning eight of those shots at the Bellarmine
net. NKU also took seven corner kicks and used one to convert
the game-tying goal in the second half.
Jenna Kramer got her fourth
consecutive win in net for the Norse with one save.
NKU (7-0,
3-0 GLVC), ranked No. 12 nationally, will take to the road next
weekend to face Missouri-Rolla (Friday) and Missouri-St.
Louis (Sunday).
