HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - Northern Kentucky University has been selected as the favorite
in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason women's soccer poll.
NKU received
12 first-place votes from the league coaches and totaled 168 points.
Southern Illinois at Edwardsville finished second in the poll with
155 points, while Wisconsin-Parkside received 145 points and placed
third.
Rockhurst received
a first-place vote and is fourth in the poll with 134 points. Missouri-St.
Louis totaled 114 points and placed fifth.
NKU posted a
19-3 record last season (12-1 in the GLVC) and captured the GLVC
Tournament championship for the sixth time in eight years. The Norse
also earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region
Tournament and hosted that event at the Town & Country Sports
Complex in Wilder, Ky.
NKU must replace
GLVC Player of the Year Kristen Votapek, but the Norse return plenty
of firepower from last season. Senior forward/midfielder Amy Law
scored 12 goals and added seven assists a year ago to earn first
team All-GLVC honors.
Alex Armstrong
earned GLVC Freshman of the Year honors in 2005 after scoring 11
goals. Sophomore Lauren Franzen scored nine goals and added eight
assists last season, while junior Jayme Light finished with seven
goals and three assists.
NKU opens its
season Aug. 25 with a road game at Concord (W. Va.). The Norse finished
No. 10 nationally in last season's NCAA Division II poll.
