ATHENS, W. Va.
- The first road trip of the season proved to be a smashing success
for the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team.
NKU concluded
its two-game trip to West Virginia by knocking off Davis & Elkins,
3-0, Sunday afternoon. The Norse - who also posted a 1-0 win over
Concord (W. Va.) on Friday - improved to 2-0.
Both victories
came against regional opponents from the West Virginia Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference. NKU, ranked No. 11 nationally in the preseason
NCAA Division II poll, is favored to win the Great Lakes Valley
Conference championship.
Jayme Light
began the scoring for NKU by drilling a shot from 20 yards into
the back of the net midway through the first half. The Norse upped
the lead to 2-0 at the 53:40 mark when freshman Amy Martini notched
her first career goal by finishing off a corner kick from Jeanna
Goettelman.
Ashley Warndorf
- who tied a school record last season with four goals against Concord
- capped the NKU scoring at the 65:36 mark by taking a Lauren Franzen
cross from the left side of the box and finishing from 10 yards
out. Warndorf, who was granted a medical redshirt after suffering
a season-ending injury in 2005, is a freshman and a graduate of
Oak Hills High School.
Freshman goalie
Jenna Kramer recorded her second straight shutout and had four saves.
Kramer is a graduate of Seton High School in Cincinnati.
NKU will begin
GLVC play Friday at 7:30 p.m. with a home game against Indianapolis
at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
