HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University soccer teams begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday with a doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

The women’s game starts at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. NKU will also play host to Southern Indiana on Sunday, with the women playing at noon and the men at 2:30 p.m.

The NKU women are 1-1 after posting a 7-1 win over Concord (W. Va.) last Friday. Freshman forward Ashley Warndorf tied a school record with four goals in that game.

The freshman’s performance enabled her to tie Betsy Moore (vs. Mercyhurst in 2000) and Tricia Ruark (vs. Wheeling Jesuit in 2001) for the NKU single-game record for goals scored. As a result of her record-tying feat, Warndorf was named GLVC Player of the Week.

NKU, ranked 24th nationally in this week’s Division II poll, is 8-0 all-time against Kentucky Wesleyan. The Norse lead the all-time series with Southern Indiana by a 7-3 margin and own five straight wins over the Screaming Eagles, including a 7-0 shutout last season at Wilder, Ky.

The NKU men are 2-1 after defeating Saginaw Valley State, 3-0, last Saturday night. David Lies, Dan Impellizzeri and Kyle Roberts each scored goals in the second half to lead NKU.

Lies snapped a scoreless tie at the 68:11 mark when he converted a rebound shot past goalie Eric Carnes. The Norse sealed the win with less than four minutes remaining when Tony Capurro sent a cross into the box and Impellizzeri finished for a goal.

Goalie Michael Braun recorded the shutout for NKU and had four saves.
