Kristen Votapek

ROLLA, Mo. - Kristen Votapek scored a goal and added two assists Sunday afternoon as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to seven with a 5-0 victory over Missouri-Rolla.

Alex Armstrong and Catie Walton each added a goal and an assist for NKU, which improved to 11-2 overall, 8-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lauren Franzen and Amy Law also scored goals as the Norse - ranked 18th nationally in the latest NCAA Division II poll - cruised to the road win.

Votapek gave NKU a 1-0 lead just 13 minutes into the game when she notched her 11th goal of the season off an assist from Armstrong. Missouri-Rolla (3-8-2 overall, 1-7-2 GLVC) held the Norse scoreless the remainder of the first half and trailed 1-0 at the break.

Armstrong extended NKU’s lead to 2-0 at the 49:28 mark with a goal that was assisted by Votapek. Franzen made it 3-0 at the 64:47 mark by finding the back of the net off another assist from Votapek.

NKU finished with a 26-10 advantage in shots. NKU goalies Sam Westerling and Kelly Bare combined for five saves and the shutout.

NKU will play host to Southern Illinois at Edwardsville at 5 p.m. Friday in a game that will likely decide the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament. SIUE is also 8-1 in the GLVC after dropping a 3-0 decision to Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday, and the Cougars own a 12-3 overall record.

A year ago, NKU and SIUE split two meetings. The Cougars defeated NKU in the regular-season contest, 2-0, at Edwardsville, Ill. The Norse, however, eliminated SIUE from the GLVC Tournament with a 2-0 victory at Kenosha, Wis.
