NORSE EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO FIVE - Oct. 2, 2005
Walton records hat trick as NKU roll past Bellarmine, 6-0

Catie Walton

WILDER, Ky. - Another day, another hat trick for a member of the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team.

The latest Norse soccer player to score at least three goals in a game this season is Catie Walton, who netted a trio of scores Sunday during a 6-0 romp past Bellarmine at the Town & Country Sports Complex. Walton, a graduate of Lebanon (Ohio) High School, entered the contest having scored one goal all season.

She became the fourth NKU player this season - and third freshman - to record a hat trick. Walton joined teammates Ashley Warndorf, Lauren Franzen and Kristen Votapek as NKU players having scored at least three goals in a game in 2005.

Votapek, a senior forward, tallied three goals on Friday during a 5-0 win at Findlay. Warndorf scored four goals on Sept. 2 in a 7-1 victory over Concord (W. Va.), and Franzen netted three goals during a 7-0 win against Kentucky Wesleyan on Sept. 9. All three freshmen recorded their hat tricks at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Freshman Alex Armstrong began the scoring onslaught Sunday by tapping in a loose ball in the box past Bellarmine goalie Merideth Jones at the 22:09 mark. Walton made it 2-0 just before halftime by finishing off a cross from Amy Law with a 10-yard shot that eluded Jones and found the net.

After Law and Franzen each tallied second-half goals to give NKU a 4-0 lead, Walton struck again at the 86:50 mark by finishing a pass from Franzen. Walton recorded the hat trick with just 49 seconds left on the clock when she knocked in a rebound to cap the NKU scoring.

NKU extended its winning streak to five and improved to 9-2 overall, 6-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Sam Westerling and Kelly Bare combined for the shutout for NKU, which is ranked 19th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll.

The Norse are now 7-1-1 all-time against Bellarmine, with the only setback to the Knights coming in 1997.

NKU will hit the road next weekend for GLVC contests at Missouri-St. Louis (Friday at 6 p.m.) and Missouri-Rolla (Sunday at 1 p.m.).
