KANSAS CITY,
Mo. - Alex Armstrong scored a goal off an assist from Lauren Franzen
with 7:23 remaining in the second overtime to give the Northern
Kentucky University women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over
Rockhurst on Sunday.
Franzen started
the winning sequence by crossing the ball to Armstrong, who finished
off the pass with a shot from six yards out that found the back
of the net. It was the first goal of the season for Armstrong, a
freshman and a graduate of Anderson High School in Cincinnati.
Franzen, a
freshman and a Campbell County High School graduate, notched her
second assist of the season as NKU improved to 5-2 overall, 3-1
in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Rockhurst, a first-year member
of the GLVC, dropped to 5-2 overall. The Hawks are 2-2 in the GLVC.
Sam Westerling
recorded the shutout and had three saves for the Norse, who are
ranked 25th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Westerling
also made the biggest defensive play of the game with 33 seconds
left in the first overtime when Rockhurst’s Megan Darby attempted
a shot on a breakaway opportunity.
Westerling,
however, came out to the 8-yard line, dove to her left and stopped
Darby’s shot attempt to send the contest into a second overtime.
NKU will play
host to Lewis at 5 p.m. Friday at the Town & Country Sports
Complex in Wilder, Ky.
