HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s April Ehlers hurled a
four-hit shutout Sunday as the Norse softball team posted a 3-0
win against Kentucky Wesleyan in the first game of a doubleheader.
Ehlers struck
out 10 batters and allowed just one walk en route to the victory.
Cara Parker went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles for the Norse. The
previous day against Southern Indiana, Parker collected five hits
and seven runs batted in during a sweep of the Screaming Eagles.
On Sunday, NKU
jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning behind run-scoring
hits from both Shatona Campbell and Ehlers. Campbell singled up
the middle to drive in Parker with the first run, and Ehlers later
doubled to center field to plate Sam Del Vecchio.
The Norse closed
out the scoring in the fifth inning when Parker drove in Rose Broderick
with an RBI single to left.
In the nightcap,
Kentucky Wesleyan rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh
inning to pull out a 5-4 decision against NKU. The Panthers collected
five hits in the seventh, capped by a two-run double from Mariel
Hamer that gave the visitors a 5-4 lead.
Broderick had
a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Kentucky Wesleyan
pitcher Haleigh Ashworth recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end
the game.
Broderick hit
her fifth home run of the season in the second game for NKU, which
is 16-16 overall, 6-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Kentucky
Wesleyan is 16-16 overall, 4-6 in the GLVC.
NKU is currently
in a five-way tie for fifth place in the GLVC standings. The top
eight teams qualify for the GLVC Tournament in May.
NKU hits the
road next weekend for doubleheaders at Missouri-St. Louis (Friday)
and Missouri S&T (Saturday).
