HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University
women's basketball team will play host to Indianapolis this
Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the 2005 Homecoming in Regents Hall.
NKU improved to 13-9 with an 83-65 win over Kentucky Wesleyan
last Saturday. The Norse are 10-5 in the Great Lakes Valley
Conference and tied for third place with Wisconsin-Parkside.
Connie Myers scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high
20 rebounds Saturday to lead NKU. Karyn Creager added a
career-high 24 points for NKU, which shot 53.3 percent from
the field.
Sarah Woods finished with 13 points for NKU. The Norse
remained perfect (21-0) against Kentucky Wesleyan in games
played in Regents Hall.
Creager scored nine points and blocked
two shots in the first half as NKU jumped out to a 36-22
lead. Woods added eight points before halftime for the Norse,
who held Kentucky Wesleyan to 27.6 percent shooting from
the
field during the opening 20 minutes.
CREAGER SETS NKU RECORD: Karyn Creager set an NKU record
on Saturday by extending her streak of consecutive made
free throws to 21.
Creager broke the previous Norse record
of 20 straight free throws, which was shared jointly by
Lori McClellan and Shannon Smith. Creager is shooting 90
percent from the line and is tied for first place in the
GLVC with Quincy's Lindsay Anderson. Creager averages 9.8
points per game.
MYERS BACK ON TRACK: NKU senior forward Connie Myers,
who was held to five points during a loss to Southern
Indiana last Thursday, recorded a 22-point, 20-rebound performance
against Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.
It marked the first time in more than five years that
an NKU player finished with at least 20 points and
20 rebounds in the same game. The last time an NKU player
posted at least 20 points and 20 rebounds was Jan. 22, 2000,
when Michelle Cottrell scored 21 points and grabbed 21 rebounds
at Saint Joseph's.
Myers leads the GLVC in rebounding at 9.0 boards per
game, and she is No. 6 in scoring at 16.1 ppg.
BURROWS WITH THE ASSIST: NKU senior point guard Elizabeth
Burrows ranks No. 4 in the GLVC in assists at 4.45
apg. Burrows is No. 3 in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.53.
NKU NO. 2 IN SCORING DEFENSE: NKU is No. 2 in the GLVC
in scoring defense at 59.4 ppg. The Norse are also
holding opponents to 40.3 percent shooting from the field,
which ranks No. 4 in the GLVC.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds, who play at Bellarmine
on Thursday, are 16-5 overall, 9 5 in the GLVC. Indianapolis
is led by Erin Moran, who averages a GLVC-best 18.5
ppg. Amy Wisser is scoring 15.1 ppg for the Greyhounds. Amanda
Davidson leads the GLVC in assists per game at 7.0.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST INDIANAPOLIS: Earlier this season
on Dec. 2, Amanda Davidson scored four points in the
final 10 seconds of the game as Indianapolis rallied for
a 61-58 win over NKU in Nicoson Hall.
With NKU holding a 58-57 lead, Davidson drove the right
baseline and powered in a layup with 10.1 seconds remaining
to give Indianapolis a 59-58 advantage. After Connie
Myers was called for traveling with 4.6 second left, Davidson
converted two free throws to extend the Indianapolis lead
to 61-58.
NKU's Karmen Graham was fouled attempting a layup with
1.1 seconds remaining, but she missed both free throws
and Indianapolis held on for the victory.
NKU led by as many as 11 points in the first half (15-4),
but Indianapolis pulled to within two points (27-25)
with a layup by Deanna Thomson at the buzzer. With the score
tied at 39-39, Indianapolis went on a 17-8 run to take a
nine-point lead with 6:21 remaining.
NKU used an 11-1 run to take a 58-57 lead with 1:52
remaining when Graham hit two free throws. Myers scored
21 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead NKU. Nikki Perkins
came off the bench to score 10 points for the Norse.
Indianapolis was led by Erin Moran, who scored 10 of
her 17 points in the second half for the Greyhounds.
Amanda Norris added 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for
Indianapolis.
