HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball
team will meet Bellarmine in the first round of the Great Lakes
Valley Conference Tournament this Friday at 1 p.m. (EST)
at Evansville, Ind.
NKU is 16-11
overall entering the GLVC Tournament, which will be played
in Roberts Stadium. The Norse finished GLVC play with a
13-7 record and are the No. 5 seed. Bellarmine, which is
20-7 overall, posted a 14-6 GLVC record and is the No.
4 seed.
The NKU/Bellarmine
winner will face either top-seeded Quincy or eighth-seeded
Southern Illinois at Edwardsville in the semifinals at
7 p.m. Saturday. The GLVC championship will be played at
4:30 p.m. Sunday, and the winner will receive an automatic
berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
GLVC
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: NKU owns a 12-5 all time
record in the GLVC Tournament, and the Norse have won
two GLVC Tournament championships.
NKU is 11-4 all-time
at Roberts Stadium during GLVC Tournament play.
A year
ago, Indianapolis posted a 67-58 win over NKU in the
first round of the GLVC Tournament.
Two years ago,
NKU defeated Wisconsin-Parkside in the first round and
lost to Quincy in the semifinals.
Three years ago,
the Norse posted wins against
Saint Joseph’s and Bellarmine before
losing to Southern Indiana in the championship
game.
Four years
ago, NKU defeated Quincy and Southern Illinois at Edwardsville
before losing to Southern Indiana in the championship game.
Five
years ago, NKU defeated IPFW, Bellarmine and Indianapolis
to capture the GLVC title.
Six years ago,
the Norse defeated Kentucky Wesleyan, Southern Indiana
and Bellarmine en route to the GLVC Tournament championship.
In
1997-98, NKU defeated Bellarmine
in the first round in Regents Hall.
The Norse lost to Southern Indiana at the PAC Arena in
the GLVC semifinals.
NKU is 3-0 all-time
against Bellarmine in the GLVC Tournament.
MYERS
LEADS GLVC IN REBOUNDING: NKU's Connie Myers
enters the GLVC leading the GLVC in rebounding at 8.5
rpg. Myers also ranks
sixth in scoring at 16.4 points per game.
The senior forward ranks 15th
in school history with 1,270
career points.
CREAGER
NO. 3 IN GLVC IN FREE-THROW SHOOTING: NKU sophomore
Karyn Creager, who earlier this season set a school record
by making
27 consecutive free throws,
ranks third in the GLVC in that category
at 88.4 percent. Creager averages
9.9 ppg and is 76-for-86 from the
line
this season.
A year ago, Creager
led the GLVC in free-throw shooting
at 87.1 percent.
THE LAST
TIME AGAINST BELLARMINE: Earlier this season
on Jan. 13, Connie Myers finished with
19 points and seven rebounds
as
NKU posted
a 56-53 win over Bellarmine
in Regents Hall.
Myers scored
10 points in the first half as NKU
built
a 30-22
lead at the break.
The Norse controlled the tempo
against the high-scoring
Knights, who entered that game averaging nearly
80
points
per contest.
IN THE
FIRST MEETING THIS SEASON: On Nov.
28 at Louisville,
Ky., Princess Wimsatt
scored 17 of her
23 points in
the second
half
as Bellarmine posted
a 77-66 win over
NKU in Knights
Hall.
Kellie Peyton
came off the bench and
added 16
points
for Bellarmine.
The Knights shot
61.5 percent from
the field and
won the rebounding
battle by a 35-27 margin.
Karyn Creager
and Karmen Graham each
scored 17
points to lead
NKU, but the Norse
shot just 34.5
percent
from the
field in
the second half.
